ABOUT > Our APC Mission

The Applied Psychology Centre is a private mental-health clinic for the delivery and study of psychological treatments, training, and interventions for people of all ages. We are committed to services and programs to enrich your life, enhance your emotional strength and resilience, and build cognitive, personal, and social skills.

Personal Efficacy

We believe and teach that people are in charge of their own destiny and responsible for their own outcomes, but that psychological education and skills-training are critical for people to make this a reality in their own lives.

Self Regulation

Self-regulation is a mind-body skill in which a person is activated, focused, goal-directed, and flexible, while controlling internal physical and psychological responses to stress. We are committed to programs and techniques that enhance this ability to self-regulate.

Science

We are committed to both a rigorous, scientific psychology and the need for research and clinical practice to be bold, unconventional, and based on clinical wisdom. We promote interdisciplinary mental-health science, and psychology's important role in the emerging behavioural and brain sciences.

DID You Know ...

Psychologists are trained in a different academic and clinical tradition than psychiatrists, and thus view human behaviour and experience in somewhat different terms.

Psychologists usually subscribe to a behavioural or cognitive-behavioural model of mental health, which give a major role to learning, training, beliefs, and experience in the causes and treatments of psychological problems. An important advantage of teaching, training, and behavioural approaches is that change is related to increased inner competence and skill. Thus, a person is more likely to retain those changes when treatment is stopped.
