The Applied Psychology Centeris a private mental-health clinic directed by Don Maxwell, Ph.D., a registered psychologist.
Dr. Maxwell received his doctorate in psychology from McMaster University in 1986, and has been practicing psychology in the Toronto area since becoming registered in 1987. He began his practice focusing on children and adolescents with learning, attentional, and emotional problems. He soon expanded his expertise to include adults and the elderly, and now assesses and treats people of all ages with a wide variety of clinical problems.
One of the most exciting shifts in Dr. Maxwell’s professional interest was his discovery of applied psychophysiology in the mid-1990s. Psychophysiology is a branch of psychology with special emphasis on the close relationship between our minds and our bodies. Advances in this area have given rise to exciting developments in our ability to control the brain’s response through EEG biofeedback, or neurofeedback. Dr. Maxwell considers neurofeedback to be one of the most significant forms of therapeutic intervention ever devised. This training and therapeutic procedure is an integral part of his program of self-regulation training for problems as diverse as ADHD, depression, conduct, and anxiety disorders.
